Classroom Opportunities

Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) and Candlewick Press would like to work with teachers who are interested in documenting what they’ve done with their students as part of a Novel Engineering unit. Sharing your experiences with other Novel Engineering teachers will help build our community and give other teachers book and implementation ideas.

As a participant in Novel Engineering professional development, the online course, or the conference, you are eligible to apply for this Novel Engineering program. Participating teachers will share what Novel Engineering looks like in their classrooms by filling out an online template that summarizes what happened in your classroom.

Tufts CEEO will select three applicants who will receive a free class set of books from Candlewick Press to support Novel Engineering with their students. As part of this classroom support, teachers will be required to:

• Implement a Novel Engineering lesson or unit between August – December 2019 using the provided class set of books.
• Submit photos of students’ projects. We do not need pictures of students, just their projects.
• Fill out an online template that asks about how you set up the unit, what problems your students found, and what their solutions were. We’ll feature your classroom on the Novel Engineering website in order to help other teachers think about Novel Engineering implementation and how specific books have been done in the classroom.

Teachers may choose from the following Candlewick Press books:

• The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo
• Rattletrap Car by Phyllis Root, illustrated by Jill Barton
• Weslandia by Paul Fleischman, illustrated by Kevin Hawkes
• Where’s My Teddy? by Jez Alborough
