Edward Tulane is a toy rabbit owned and loved by a ten-year-old girl named Abilene. But Edward is very vain and only thinks of himself, never appreciating the love he receives from Abilene. One day, while Abilene’s family is vacationing and aboard an ocean liner, Edward falls overboard and is stuck at the bottom of the sea for many months. He is dredged up by the net of a fisherman, who brings Edward home to his wife to clean up and keep. From there, Edward is lost and found by many owners, from a hobo to a girl dying from tuberculosis. Edward sees these owners struggle, yet they still offer him kindness and love, and eventually Edward begins to find the capacity to love others.
